6 Twitter accounts for quirky laughs
Twitter is the perfect place for people to show their funny side. The 280 character limit is well suited to one-liners, the platform is more text-focused than Snapchat or Instagram, and there’s endless tweets for inspiration when we feel like sharing our humour with the Twitterverse.
Career comedy writers such as Trevor Noah, Ricky Gervais and Rob Delaney all have worldwide comedy creds in real life and on social media, but some unexpected people and obscure accounts also consistently tweet rib-crackers and side-splitters.
Here are six Twitter accounts which are kooky, cheeky, quirky and just good, old-fashioned funny.
Ryan Reynolds(@VanCityReynolds)
Reynolds started off as star of the US sitcom Two Guys and a Girl, so his wise cracking is well established on TV. Then his vulgar cheek in the Deadpool film showed us just how far the Canadian actor is willing to go for the sake of laughs. Reynolds’s tweets are another highlight of his slightly-twisted humor. (Un)Fortunately, most are about his family.
Top tweets include:
Just want to wish Billy Ray Cyrus the most special, magical birthday ever. I love you with all my heart. Also, Happy Birthday to my wife.

James AF (@JamesJamesAF)
If you have sweet spot for suburban South African slang and amusing pictures of cats, spend a few moments scrolling through the tweets and RTs of James Freemantle. The Cape Tonian, with the bio “half jock half joking” and a love of Twitter polls, blends sarcasm and silliness to bring a smirk to any face.
James's top tweets include:

Thoughts of Dog (@dog_feelings)
Yes, I had to include a pet account and yes, the admin behaves as if they are a dog, interacting with the Twitter dog community and sharing dog-relevant news. But since dog thoughts are more relatable to Twitter users than you might think, the tweets will make you smile, maybe tear up a bit (from cuteness overload), and definitely feel the need to RT. And the best thing: the bad grammar makes the content even better!
Top thoughts include:
snooze. you lose? please. a snooze. is always. a victory

Chauncy Smart (@ChauncySmartt)
The Miami-based college athlete spends his time running track, around football fields and his fingers on Twitter, producing some hilarious jabs and jokes. His responses to other users’ “tell me something” tweets, which he retweets with a comment, are his trademark gags, among other witty observations.
Touch-down tweets include:
The past tense of William Shakespeare would be Wouldiwas Shookspeared. https://t.co/kWCgymnZnP

Big Ben (@big_ben_clock)
This one isn’t too controversial, nor is it that interesting, but it’s still funny. The account admins tweet every hour to let serial scrollers know what time it is. Just like the classic Big Ben clock rising high above Westminster, the Twitter version literally ‘BONG’s the number of the hour.
Top hours include:

Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson)
The astrophysicist and science broadcaster with a voice of warm chocolate cake loves tongue-in-cheek jibes with a scientific topic. In between talking endlessly about space, planets, stars, black holes and other stuff too technical for the general population, Neil has been known to make quirky comments, with sciencey terms, on observations from everyday life which we take for granted.
Top hypotheses include:
Just an FYI: The proper word for someone from Venus, -- the planet of love, beauty, and its consequences — is “Venereal.” But medical doctors took the word before astrophysicists did. So we’re stuck with “Venusians”.
— Neil deGrasse Tyson (@neiltyson) February 14, 2018
If Classical Music concerts had progress bars, then people unfamiliar with the piece would never be confused when to clap at the end.
