Some interesting research is beginning to pop up in a bid to catch up with the explosive growth of the internet in the last few years. World Advertising Research Centre have published an article called It's all about influence. Good quote from the article:

"If advertising enabled brands to talk like people, brands now have to act like people because, in the words of Hugh Macleod, “If you talked to people the way advertising talked to people, they’d punch you in the face.”
