Guardian gets the Tweets, WhatsApp launches on the web and Facebook knows you pretty well...

By Danielle on 22 January 2015

You made it through the most depressing day of the year (Monday 19th January, apparently) and now the Friday finish is here. As a Friday treat, why not grab yourself a beer, sit back, and have a read through a recap of the week in digital.

Facebook knows you better than your loved ones

Cambridge and Stanford University researchers have created an algorithm making computers a better judge of your personality than your friends, family, and even your partner. This Akinator-style artificial intelligence mines your Facebook Likes for personality traits and represents an important milestone on the path of computer-human social interaction. Sounds like ‘Her’ is about to become a whole lot more real. Except for the part where you can make a living for writing other people’s greetings cards. Though never say never?

Guardian is the most tweeted UK newspaper

Move aside sidebar of shame. According to research by Searchmetrics, The Guardian website receives the most Tweets per week out of all UK newspapers, driving an average 392,358 Tweets per week. The Daily Telegraph (307,690 Tweets per week) and Daily Mail (237,381) follow in second and third place respectively. Despite The Guardian’s social media dominance, the most tweeted online newspaper article of 2014 was a Daily Mail piece about a YouTube cooking show teaching dog owners how to make homemade pet food. Yes, really.

‘While You Were Away’ goes live

‘Twas not too long ago that word of Twitter’s hot new timeline feature was filtering through the Twittersphere. And now, in the third week of January, Twitter has officially launched ‘While You Were Away’ on iOS. Like a trusted tin of Ronseal, the feature basically does what it says on the tin. While life happens, Twitter will provide a snapshot of the best Tweets that you might have missed ‘while you were away’. The more you check in, the less often you’ll see the recap.

WhatsApp with iPhones?

Attention Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry users of the world, messaging app WhatsApp can now be accessed via the web. Jan Koum, co-founder and CEO of WhatsApp, stated on a Facebook post that the Google Chrome desktop web app would act as ‘an extension of your phone’, mirroring conversations and messages from your mobile devices. Unfortunately, due to Apple platform limitations, iOS users will just have to wait their turn. Does it get two blue ticks from you?
