Users are flocking to new apps to claim usernames and get a head start building their audience in case TikTok is shut down by the US government. There appear to be two main players. Byte, Triller, Zynn, Clash, Instagram, and Snapchat are already offering features similar to TikTok. Triller has already managed to get some celebrities on board, such as Snoop Dogg, Marshmello, and Mike Tyson. Read more
Twitter will start to signpost state/government accounts
Twitter will begin to signpost the accounts of government officials and state-affiliated media outlets, after similar policies were introduced by Facebook and YouTube. The feature has already begun to roll out in some countries. As part of this effort, Twitter will also stop recommending tweets from state-affiliated media. The US State Department has a label (as does Secretary of State Mike Pompeo), for example, while The US State Department doesn’t. TikTok is launching its first TV app, called “ More on TikTok,” on Amazon Fire TV devices today . It will have feature curated video playlists and compilations from the mobile TikTok app, Amazon spokesperson Delaney Simmons confirmed in an email to The Verge. Read more
Study shows Instagram’s algorithm favoured Trump over Biden
The Tech Transparency Report discovered that a searches related to Joe Biden led to hashtags that insulted the former VP, such as #creepyjoebiden. People who clicked on such hashtags saw content that cast Biden in a negative light. Read more
TikTok assures advertisers in case Trump gets his ban
TikTok it is giving brands a lifeline should it get shut down. According to AdAge, brands and agencies say they are getting guarantees that if the app is closed, their marketing campaigns are covered. If the platform is banned then all media spend will be returned for media that has not run. Read more
